Spanish Life as I see it

Blog about how living in Spain is from a Spaniard point of view. I will write about traditions, curiosities, news and everything related with Spain.

New Year's Eve in Spain

New Year's Eve is not very different in Spain to other western countries. Most of the people dinner with their families with the TV on to notice when 12 o'clock is coming. Some other people prefer to go to the main square in the city and celebrate with friends.

In any case, the biggest tradition comes at 12. With each peal of the clock announcing the time, you have to eat one grape. This means you will eat 12 grapes for 12 peals that in this case also symbolize the 12 months of the year.

In Salamanca, a province that is famous because its capital Salamanca city is one of the most important destinations to learn Spanish and to enjoy an Erasmus grant; there is a village in which one year that there was a blackout during the night. As a result, people couldn't follow the peaks in the TV and got very angry. From that moment, they started to celebrate the New Year's Eve on August 11th. This radition endured between 1995 and 2011. Eventually, they stopped the celebration, though I'm not sure about the reason.

Apart from that, there are many other traditions such as wear something red (usually underwear) or put something made of cold in the champagne cup.
