Spanish Life as I see it

Blog about how living in Spain is from a Spaniard point of view. I will write about traditions, curiosities, news and everything related with Spain.

Barcelona Vs Real Madrid something more than a football game

Tomorrow we have El Clásico, or as we say at least twice a year, the game of the century. I say at least twice a year, because Real Madrid and Barcelona usually play more than the two games they have in La Liga, because they usually meet each other in la Copa or the Champions League. What can I say? People say Spaniards like to exagerate...and having two games of the century per year is just a small proof of it.

Almost everybody likes football here. Traditionally it was men who were interested, but now there are a lot of women that also love this sport. The media talk about its everyday, everytime. Actually, if you like any other sport, you will hardly get any new about it in the TV. The news announce they are going to start the sports section and they just talk about football. This becomes crazy in summer, when there are not football games, because they end talking about Cristiano Ronaldo abs or the new haircut of Messi.

I love sport, and I think it is better that children play football instead of video-games. But, to be honest, Real Madrid Vs Barcelona games are much more than just a football game.

In Spain there are some regions that don't want to be part of the country anymore. Catalonia, the region where Barcelona is, is one of them.

Madrid is the capital of the country, so these games are a kind of politic battle against people that want Catalonia to leave Spain and people who don't. I think each time this teams play the two sides are more angry with each other.

I really don't like mixing sports and politics. This is something football does a lot in Europe. I think it is part of its success. It is not just a sport, but they way many people express their ideas.

In my opinion ideas are better expressed in books and dialoges than in a stadium shouting agains the referee.

Incidentally, I think Real Madrid will win this time :)
